Chapter Nine
Raking her gaze over the campsite, Sylvie didnât see anything that indicated the man in the red shirt was Sean. The green sleeping bag wasnât anything unusual, it looked like the typical bed roll that every ranch hand owned. There were no glowing embers in the small fire pit but she needed to get closer to see if the debris was still warm.
She moved to stand, but Dawson grabbed her arm and tugged her down. âWait,â he whispered. âCould be a trap.â
A trap? She frowned and scanned the area again. The place looked deserted, although clearly leaving his sleeping bag behind meant he was planning to return. She whispered, âWe saw the guy in the red shirt moving away from the campsite.â
âNo, we saw him moving along the mountainside, then disappearing from view,â Dawson corrected. âIâd like you to stay here, while I check out the area.â
It went against the grain to let Dawson go off without her, but he was a Navy SEAL. If anyone could move silently through the brush, it was him. Not to mention, he was armed. âOkay.â
âHere, take this.â He pressed the gun into her hand.
âYouâll need it more than me,â she argued.
âI have a knife and I want you to be safe.â
She scowled, but Dawson moved soundlessly into the brush before she could voice another argument. She stared at the weapon, then back at the campsite.
Okay, fine. She knew how to shoot a gun, but if the guy in the red shirt was her brother, she wouldnât need it. Sean might be feeling desperate enough to lash out at her, but she was certain she could get him to listen to reason.
She settled in to wait, impressed that she didnât see or hear Dawson making his way through the woods. She shivered a bit as she realized he must have used these same tactics while entering terrorist camps and other war zones.
Heâd spent twenty years putting his life on the line for his country. As far as she knew, Dawson was the only guy from Dillon, Montana to do so.
A squirrel jumped through the campsite, disappearing in the brush on the other side. She waited another few minutes, then eased out from behind the brush and crept toward the campsite.
Dawsonâs weapon was heavy in her hand. She was more accustomed to holding a rifle, in a sling over her shoulder. Still, she kept it handy, prepared for anything.
She lowered her hand over the charred remains of the fire. It was warm, but not hot. Made sense, considering the timeframe between when theyâd seen the guy in the red shirt, and had set down the bird to hike up here. Then she moved toward the sleeping bag. She tried to remember the last time sheâd seen Seanâs pack, but couldnât. It just wasnât something sheâd cared enough about to notice.
The location near the large rock, though was a familiar spot for her brother. Theyâd hiked there as kids, and it was easy to imagine Sean hiding out here.
